Is there some personal safety equipment like an SOS button that alarms people and send your location when you're in trouble? I can imagine that kiting in open water can be dangerous.

Yes, it's called an EPIRB: beacons.amsa.gov.au/

They are actually mandatory beyond 400M from shore (at least in WA that is): www.transport.wa.gov.au/mediaFiles/marine/MAC-B-KiteWindsurfingSafetyGuidelines.pdf

If you're not in WA, You should check the rules for your state.

Any recommendations on units small enough to use whilst kiting, I think the rules are slightly different here in Vic being 2Nm off shore.
I'm more interested in one for the long down winders were planning when the season starts

Google PLB (personal locator beacons) and you'll find plenty of options. Mine is a KTI (smallest available at the time) purchased from RTM, and is always in a little pouch I have attached to the front of my impact vest where it's not in the way at all.

Thanks for the info, didn't see the smaller PLB looks like the go for the downwinders
