tendonitis of big toes

I have been having recurrent tendonitis of both big toes for about three years - the tendon on top of the foot.

It particularly flares up if a find myself riding a twin tip in the waves - really pulling back with my big toes to keep the board on my feet as I'm cutting across a steep face, or trying not to lose it if I get rumbeld by a big wave.

It's reaching the point where now even if I go for a jog my tendon sheaths swell up for a couple of days and I limp around the place. I suspect I probably need to get a steroid injection in them, but not keen if I can avoid it.

Is this something anyone else has had? What worked to settle it down?

Is it a foot strap issue - any brands seem better than any others?

I had same problem in my wrist after a break.
I had 2 cortisone injections over 12 months.
Problem has since dissipated some what.

Try some emulgel voltaren, also helped to reduce swelling!

We do so many steroid injections at work under imaging guidance.
They are great and Ive had one in my shoulder for biceps tendonitis.
A steroid/cortisone injection is a powerful anti inflammatory that is directed around the tendon. Tendonitis basically means inflamed tendon - you get fluid building up around the tendon and that causes pain. A steroid injection aims to clean up that fluid. Some people can get a cure from these (my tendonitis never returned), some people only get a bandaid fix (i.e. they have a mechanical or anatomical problem thats causing the issue in the first place and may need to keep having them in the future or have the problem managed by a specialist), and for some the injection doesn't work at all.
Its a very quick procedure and and you really have nothing to lose. There is always a risk of infection as you are breaking the skin with a needle, but there is always a risk with everything else in life and of course everything they use is sterile, employing a sterile technique. At worst, it just doesn't work and at best you can go on and enjoy pain free kiting.
Hope this helps.

I have you ever considered going strapless on a surfboard until it heals?

A couple of things I take for inflamation(I mix them up a bit):
1. MSM - taste like sh!t but I think it works well and it accelerates recovery time bigtime.
2. Curcumin - a Tumeric extract but expensive because some medical crowd has patented it.
3. VelBexx 17 - A rub made out of natural stuff and it seems to work on my lower back and knees quickly.

Maybe try strapping your foot or calf - speak to a physio and see what he recommends.

I had patella tendonidis on my left knee, kite surfing related. Bloody painful, even at rest (could hardly sleep).

Cortison injection, anti inflammatory pills but mostly lots of ice packs. If you feel it flaring up, ice is my advice. Apply for an hour or so twice a day.

If it persists, you could consider wake board style booties, take the strain off your toes...

Good luck mate.

Rich what is MSM.

I'd ice my foot after each kite.

en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Methylsulfonylmethane

Do a.search for it, there are always the nay Sayers but if you think it does the job you are halfway there.

There is an Ozzie brand that I buy, www.msmaustralia.com

I.always like to share this type of info to get a better consensus on what works and what doesn't . I like to experiment but I.think the MSM really does improve the recovery time

Thanks all for the input

I normally do ride strapless on a surf board. There's the odd day that doesn't suit.

Now it has reached a problem where any twintip session causes a problem.

Sounds like toe tendonitis from kiting isn't common, and I'm just soft!

Looks like I'll have to try a steroid injection

Try some Dakine Raptor heel bungies, they keep you locked in so no need to put excessive strain on your toes

Your problem is right there. Try keeping the board on by pushing down with your toes instead so the the middle of your foot pushes up into the strap. Most pads have toe ridges for a reason - your toes will be pushing into, not away from, the pad to increase grip. Try it on land without a kite to work out the physics. You may need to adjust your straps too if you change your technique.

Before injections get some xrays and a ultra-sound and get a specialists to check. I had similar probs but around the ankle joint. Turns out it was a bone spur from footy days. Day surgery, couple months later and I can now run on it for the first time in years. Well do the cliff young shuffle anyhow...doesn't hurt when kiting anymore either. But yes strap and technique adjustment is crucial as I had to sort this out to keep kiting for 5 years with a bone spur.
