I recently picked up a pair on DonJoy Nano's. These are an "off the shelf" osteo arthritis knee brace that provide a lot of stability and relieve OA pain but do not provide full protection for ACL injuries. I say "off the shelf" because you have to get fitted for them by a specialist as they can cause serious damage to your knee due to the load they put on them if they are not right for your condition. The Nano's are apparently the lightest on the market now (magnesium frame) but you will be better off looking at one of the ACL specific braces out there.
Don Joy has a great range suited for ACL and also OA ACL braces and on most of the ACL braces provide a guarantee that you will not do an ACL again whilst wearing the brace - a big call!
Take a look at the DonJoy Armor or some of the other braces but you MUST speak with your knee doctor and physio before getting one - the side effects of getting the wrong one are too high in my book.
Unfortunately, these dont fit the budget requirement in my books - the Nano's were $900 ea and whilst the Armor and some of the others are below the $600 mark, it still isn't a cheap exercise. I have advanced degenerative osteo arthritis in both of my knees but unfortunately am only 36 so still 15-20 years before a doc will consider a knee replacement so the braces not only extend my longevity of kiting but also delay my next grease and oil change which may end up saving me an operation between now at 50 odd so I look at the $1800 spent as being way cheaper than an operation with the added benefit of still being able to participate in the things I enjoy.

Cheers,

Ben

Cracknback: turning 37 this weekend, appreciating more and more every day how lucky I am
Who knows if the greens get in we might all focus on quality over quantity a bit more
Fat chance though.
Good luck with the knees both of you

patticonnon : was on a 138 tona pop with very old airrush pads n straps . I wont use that combo again and will put boots on it . Just have to man up ! Lol . Returned kite surfing (riding 132 luluz) taking it very easy with Thor mx knee braces but have and want donjoys . Fellow kite surfer Nicole recommended braces with ridged support around front of quad and rear of calf muscle . And donjoys have it . Have to remember to take it easy for the moment and after op wait till fit .

time to retire the twinny dude, you wont be pulling F16's forever, longevity is the key in my eyes not to burn out too early. Look at the next 50 years

Donjoy (and CTi) definitely need to be fitted by a specialist, Donjoy also need to fix/change the steel strap buckles, they rust quite quickly. The hinge/joint seems to get corrosion issues too. I've gone back to my CTi check both out, the CTi's are all carbon, no corrosion issues.

Dude, it's better to burn out than to fade away lol. Did my MCL in March but not to totally crippled so kept it up like you have and lotts of bandages and cut up wetsuits later, it's totally healed - fully amazed and stoked. I think the key is to throw in as much toe side as you can, that s**t burn's! and the stronger the muscles the safer the knees, that an avoiding any waves hitting from the side, ouch. Good luck on the table bro and yeah that gear sounds like the stuff Jack Brabham used to race around on.

Hey Cracknback they're is a new knee procedure which they inject stem cells from your stomach into your knees to promote the growth of your cartlidge results have been promising.Unfortunately it's not covered by Medicare yet and at 9000.00 a pop it's not cheap and it only takes 4.5 hours with a 80 percent success rate of up to 30 percent of the cartlidge growing back.

Thanks for the heads up danaza, have been doing some research on this today and looks promising, prices seem to vary from about 7k to 9k, will have a speak to them and see if it is not too late for me and if maybe it is worth waiting for price to come down a little.
