Been a while since I posted, but here goes!

Last time I had to get new home contents insurance I did a lot of ringing around, and only found 2 or 3 insurers that would cover kiting gear at all, and ended up going with CGU who had portable contents cover, so all our gear was covered wherever we were in Oz and NZ (including on the beach!) without specifying items etc.

Of course, with this years renewal notice, CGU is no longer offering home and contents policies, and have handballed to NMRA. Thus far they said "of course we cover kayaks", and only if each item insured separately. I haven't even bothered asking about cover on the beach.....

Anyone recently done the legwork on the best home and contents insurer for those of us who take a lot of sporting/kiting and other kit away from home fairly regularly, to save me wasted hours?

With RAC and my kite gear is covered. You have to specify them separately but then the are covered at home or away from the home.

AAMI have portable valuables cover. If it's unspecified it's up to $1000 per item, if it's specified it's to the value of. Anywher in Oz & NZ. For international travel, travel insurance takes care of it.

I add my kites when I buy new ones, then remove them once they get to a few years old when I reckon I could probably replace them for a grand.

Interestingly, reading the PDS, they don't cover "loss or damage to sporting, recreational and leisure goods and drones whilst in use but we will cover bicycles whilst in use, but not whilst being used for racing or pace-making;"

So that means if you lose your board while kiting and you can't locate it, you're not covered. But if you accidently leave it on the beach at the end of the day and then can't locate it, you're covered. Likewise, crash your kite on a barbwire fence = not covered. Accidently shred your kite on a barbwire fence while going for a walk = covered! I guess it all comes down to what you put down on the claim form.

Thanks all.
I guess I was spoiled with our last insurance as they had high item limits, did not require specification of items, and included cover in a vehicle or even sitting on the beach (not in active use). Will check out suggestions. RAC when I contacted them some years ago said they wouldnt cover kiteboarding stuff AT ALL, even locked in the home.....
