This is how I would do it (FFWD to 3.50)
I use a bit of both, fluffing the knots apart, but one trick I've learnt is the reverse of what he suggested.
I find the end of each line,
trace it back to the tangle, and pulling it through the rat's nest until it
comes out the other end. Repeat! He mentions this somewhat towards the end converting a 5-line problem into a 4-line problem. But the concept is the same. Treat each line individually.
After the 3rd line, the rest falls apart. Easy!
