I've managed to put a 15cm tear in the bottom area of my OD M1 .......just above the stretchy area that the up haul is passed through and attached to the mast base area. I thought I'd just epoxy a patch on both the inside and out side faces of the material - no such luck. The epoxy just slides straight off with out a hint of wanting to stick. The material does feel like it may well have a polyethylene impregnation and if that's the case, what will stick if I was to use the patch method or alternatively, what might be the best method of fixing this tear. The material feels quite fragile and wouldn't take much to continue tearing when loaded up under down haul conditions.
Hi mate, if it's the orange sleeve part the mast sleeve material has coating on it, it's a real pain in the arse to even get seam tape to stick to it, the way we do it is to get some sand paper, about 120 grit and lightly sand the area to get tape to stick to it, the best solution is to get it repaired properly, if that's not an option get an old piece of mast sleeve from some where and stitch it by hand, use the mast sleeve material on the outside and some sticky back in the inside.
Was that when de rigging? Every time I let of the down haul that hole for the upuhaul get caught on the Severne extension collar and tries to tear tear. It's a real pain in the arse.
Hi Ben1973, it was and it does, only it was a Chinook Collar that caused the issue. I was kinda hoping my new Severne collar wont be as painful, but it seems we will have to wait and see
P.C - looks like im going to need to get my sew all out of retirement Thank you for your input.
Hand sew with one of those half circle needles and a strong non cotton thread, like fishing rod binding twine.
You will need pliers to push the needle thru.
After about 30mins you will have a neat job, sore fingers and be bleeding from many of them.
You will then not wanna do it again so will pay for pro repairs ......but it works.
