Sorry, forgot about this. No discount, you either take 1 board under 15 kg or you pay the 20kg sports equipment up front.
With 2 boards i was at 16kg...

Check out the smuggler board bag by surf lite with the false bottom.
Maybe be able to sneak an extra board past the greedy checkin staff

Ok so we went with 6 guys to Padang through KL.
some guys had two/three boards and were under or just above 15kg...no dramas, they went free even with two or three boards. They didn't even look like checking for how many boards...just the weight.
Most guys were well over 19-20kg and had pre paid the sports goods fee 20kg ,about $80 each way.
Interestingly the check in guy in Sydney said when u check in as a group u can spread the weight out between passengers which can help too.
Any Air Asia were pretty cool boards wise!

The only time I have had dramas was flying through the Americas.
Ruthless. They treat it like their own business.
I remember once I got out of it with the checkin staff being completely distracted by another customer. This resulted in a full blown argument which led to them completely forgetting about my board tax.
Needless to say I didn't remind them.
