Hi All,
I picked up a used 10' Beau Young Sea Plane Mk2 (if that makes a difference) a couple of years ago.
I've ridden it a bunch of times, but I'm just not 100% sold on the board.
I thought I might play around more with different fins/set ups, and thought I'd try and save myself some time by asking the wise members of Seabreeze what their experience of the board and fins was?
I see in a video that Beau Young was riding one with a salty merchants 10.5 sock jam - but I'm not Beau Young.

Anyone with fin recommendations for the board?

Cheers!

I had rhe seaplane sbw 10 fter.
Yeah. I played the fin game on that board
Shapers s9 centre fin with size 7 side bites. Almost a thruster. Slide up and down to suit. Best setup i tried on it easy
Gee i miss that board.
Enough rocker to play on bigger waves and yet surf small and super early wave pickup.

That depends a lot on how you are surfing it and what sort of waves...

My 10' Clearwater Hotlog is not a dis-similar outline but I only really ride it when its nice lined up walls around waist to chest high... I basically try and bottom turn noseride and maybe the odd cutback to noseride. I run Glide Fins 10" hatchet and it's a great fin.

But, if you are more trying to turn it and surf from the tail of the board a Greenough 4a around the 10" mark would be the go I would think.

Greenough 4a

Glide Hatchet

"That depends a lot on how you are surfing it ....." - like the rest of my boards, poorly.

I like the idea of playing with a 'thruster-like' set up, particularly as I read that many riders seem to use smaller than 'usual' fins in their gliders. Well, smaller than the usual 'inch of fin for foot of board' type approach.
However, if I don't like that set up, I'm stuck with fins I will likely never use again.

Looking at my fin rack, I do have an Island Fin Design "Leeward" (hatchet) that is either 9.5" or 10". Also have a Island Fin Design 10" Islander, which is similar to the 4A, and 10.5" Alkali/Thomas fin sitting there too.

Where do you live Damned??

Maybe someone could lend you a set to try so you don't blow 200 bones on a fin setup you don't like,

Also cruise through Gumtree and Facebook Marketplace....especially the posts that have been up for a long time. They are ripe for a low ball offer !!

Ll is not skipping leg day..

Too much fin for me. The smaller size AMs in the side for me..

Clearwater set from shapers is really, really good too.

There answers the question, nope he don't do leg days,so the fin set up was his issue

But I must say I've known or heard of the cat called LL and without doubt this board was held on for the longest in history.

If your surfing it as a glider less fin is your friend for sure and there's no need for sides as they will just create drag... The function of a thruster or three fin array is to assist with turning and stability when waves are bigger/steeper or you are turning more critically.

The islander 10" looks really nice but you could go 9" I reckon and the Thomas Bexton by Alkali is a cracker, I found it to be a really fast and smooth fin, I only swapped it for the Hatchet as it was more stable on the nose... But the hatchet is pretty much redundant unless your noseriding.

Thats my thinking anyways...

A volan true Ames Greenough 4a or any Alkali fin would be ...... Worth more than the board!

What fin have you had in it?

The islander would be nice. I like a 10" fin in a 10" board and know a few other breezers like that setup on 10'ers

If i didnt snap the board on my car racks i still would be surfing mine.
Best around longboard ive had .

4,5,6 ft alley and rainbow to 1 ft lm grovellers.

Enough rocker to drop in on wide bombs yet a early getter of ankle snapper waves

Granted . They arent really easy riding beginner boards.

Took the board for a spin this morning with the Alkali/Bexon fin... Yes, there were waves on the GC this morning, if you got lucky.
To begin with, the board was as I remembered it, the only word I can think of to describe it was 'doughy'. Then, I finally found the right spot on the board again. Board was surprisingly agile with that large fin.
I'll give it another surf with that fin, then swap out for IFD 'Islander'.... after that, maybe the 10.25" Shapers Gatto?

I don't see too many recommendations for the Shapers (Single) fins on here. Any idea why that is?

Cheers!

I know LL - hence why I deliberately noted shapers single fins.
I do want to give the S9 a go - although it kinda seems like Shapers is now just calling it the 5.5" Performance Box Thruster fin, so similar?

Oh LACEY once danced on this board it's a shame the relationship broke down or the board broke but that's another story, remember two traps are better than one

Hi mate; Some of those bigger Shapers Fins have bases of 10" so unless you have a 12" fin box so some adjustment can be made you are restricted.

Plan B (plan A?) could be too sell it to Lacey and buy a more classic glider that's less temperamental...

My 10' Clearwater Hotlog is just the easiest, smoothest thing to ride... And it will handle tiny crumblers right up to pretty critical oh stuff as I used to use it for that.

I wouldn't sell the Sea Plane - didn't pay enough for it in the first place and it's picked up a few knocks and bumps along the way.

A Clearwater/SDR is the board that I'm currently saving for. They don't seem to list the HotLog anymore, but I assume the Captain's Log is the next iteration? Either way, when I stop bleeding money, and finally finish the bathroom reno, I'll be going to have a chat to SDR about a new board.
