I want to bring a 12' board back from LA on my next visit. Does anyone have advice on what airline is most likely going to allow such a long board on checked (oversized) luggage at no extra cost? QANTAS seems to be a 9'1" cut off. Is there a trick to getting around these restrictions? Obviously, the pros must do it all the time but they don't seem to be eager to give up their trade secrets.

Hawaiian did not blink at 11 foot a few years ago.

Most Pros are riding Big Brand boards
Not positive, but I think big brands have raceboards at shops all over the world, so the racers usually don't have to bring them.
One of my buddies tells them that his board is a windsurfer..... he said they are more accommodating ?
or try this trick...
A pro I know, took the baggage claim ticket off one of his incoming bags and simply put it on his new raceboard for the return flight.
When the attendants balked at the size of his board he said "I flew here with it!" pointing to the claim ticket on the board bag.
so they shrugged and said "ok"

I love that idea. I was planning on taking a board bag over so it will be ready for the return journey. I'll just send it through as an empty checked bag and it will be all set with stickers and claim tickets. Brilliant. Thanks for the suggestion.
Talk to the Jacksons, Angie and her fella, from the Gold Coast they regularly travel with big boards.
ET.
Yeah I'm doing the Board bag trick as well, bit small than yours but a great trick. Too be honest I have travelled a lot with boards and only once have I seem Check in staff pull out a tape measure. It was in the States though

Just flew to Bali with qantas .. they didn't check the board and arrived in perfect condition.. the $2 pool noodles did their work. Also the brilliant sunova bag got it all in one piece
