There are a few yachts with stainless steel keels lead filled Cold moulded Van de Stadt 34's, some of Knoop's 30 footers...
Thanks for that.
Interesting that it is not recommended for hulls but seems to be ok for keels.
Not really getting the logic.
I might be corrected here, but it looks to me that it is something to do with corrosion. Stainless steel needs access to oxygen to keep it shiny, which is why it is not often used underwater. SS will survive in oxygenated water, but it will rust really quickly in a de-oxygenated environment . The trouble is that it is not predictable on the outer skin of a boat. A corrosion pinhole in a sheet of stainless steel would be a big problem in a hull, where there is nothing but air on the inside. The same kind of pinhole would not be the same kind of problem on a keel, where there is nothing but a big lump of lead on the inside. Makes me wonder about the effect of dissimilar metals, though, where you have lead in direct contact with SS in a seawater environment.
Perhaps cost ? Not just the basic material but also welding rods, drill abilities, etc. I've just rebuilt my gunnel rail with 304, got 70 of the 74 drill holes in the right place, now I have to devise a way to mount the little pedestal drill in situ to redrill the 4 offenders. It happens
Glory that's a big effort. Lots of drill bit sharpening I assume.
Yes cost is the main problem but super duplex grade stainless needs to be used for better corrosion resistance. Google "stainless steel in boat construction" and numerous good links will come up, the best being;

But it looks like SSYS went bankrupt in 2021 so that probably tells a story

Underwater super duplex stainless finished to mirror polish to avoid growth - no afouling. Above water suitable 2 pack paints.
Looks like if the life cycle cost model is used and the life is long enough, and utilisation / availability high enough, then the reduced slipping and afouling costs could outweigh the initial capex costs. Albeit very rare to see purchasing depts and accountants agree to high capex purchases, whatever the industry.
Better than a stainless yacht, if a titanium yacht appeals

No sharpening needed, I used Sutton tools inox drills, got through the 6mm no trouble. The 12mm holes in 10mm 304 for the chainplates was likewise trouble free. Broke the 5mm pilot drill on the 2nd last onboard hole and I managed to push a 10mm bit through with no pilot, I'm sure it would have been a spectacle with me sitting on the little pedestal drill on the bow whilst operating it ! It was so much easier in the workshop
Ridiculously cheap NS14 with history. Only for fans of cedar decks and a liking for traditional varnishing!

No matter how good your drill bits are or what you are drilling this stuff makes life a lot easier.
Awfully cheap yacht for $11,000.

A bargain for somebody. S&S Yankee (30 ft) For $8500. These yachts were strongly built without compromise. I am sorely tempted.

Interesting that the yanks were doing internal liners back in the day which makes the interior hold up much better than Australian boats of that era. Might be quite a bargain as you can't even get a Compass 28 for that sort of money.
Anyone ever heard of a stainless steel yacht?
If the hull is really stainless steel, then clearly it would have been an "amateur" who made that decision. Its well known fact that stainless steel breaks down rapidly when submerged. Even super corrosion resistant stainless steel like Duplex breaks down leaving you with more headaches than a mild steel hull. Corten would have been a better choice and is proven in steel hull construction. The ad is not very clear, maybe they only built the deck out of stainless and the hull is just regular mild steel?
What about all the stainless steel prop shafts, keel bolts, and rudder stocks out there?

That would be so cool. Wonder what electrolysis issues would be?

Better than SS I should imagine. I bolted my new 316SS bow roller in place with one large titanium bolt. I'll check it occasionally over the next few years!
Even at $5800 this is a quality small boat. Lead keel.

O.M.G.
Unless it makes you coffee every morning, mows the lawn weekly and invests in the stock market for you, there isn't a snowballs chance in hell I'd pay $230K for an S&S 34. Pedigree or no, that's just nuts.
Sold very quickly and is moving to Queensland...someone must have really wanted it. Replacement for a Pogo , maybe?

I have to go to Europe in early September for work. Looking at a wee stopover in Bitonto and Combrit, just for a little look .

Went aboard when she was for sale many years ago. What a stunning craft all round. Bit of a bargain at this money I think. Trying to remember when it was but I'm thinking 12 odd years ago. $125k from memory.....

It looks like a great bargain to me, hard enough to find a boat like that let alone at such a low price. I don't think you can even buy NZ Kauri Pine anymore, my understanding is its one of the premium boat building materials, I wouldn't be surprised if you could get your hands on some that the amount required to build this boat would cost more for just rough sawn planks than the asking price of the boat. If I was in the market I would have a look at this one very quick.

Lovely looking boat, the thing to look out for would be leaking and rotten decks. Looks like it still has the original teak strips screwed in which is often a weak spot. But as Ramona has proved a complete deck replacement may not be a big deal as it first appears. The outstanding list of stuff just looks like typical maintenance work the comes up regularly as part of the cost of boat ownership. If work is required I hear Kettering around the corner has an excellent ship yard. I hope it finds a good home.
If I were still in the market I couldnt fly down quick enough to have a look at this. The new triple spreader mast and sails alone are probably worth the asking price and there is a lead keel to boot.
