Greta needed a lift to the COP UN 25 Climate summit that was moved from Chile to Madrid so Riley offered the lift. Nicki Henderson is part of the crew to up the skill level a bit and they would need extra crew for this journey. First time they have sailed out of the trade winds except for Riley's solo trip to NZ.

Looks like some iron genoa work to get offshore. Must have had to give greta a sleeping pill for that bit or riley might have copped a HOW DARE YOU!

Hats off to them though they are under sail now and its a tricky time to cross the atlantic - just take a look at a 7 day weather chart. lots of active routing required to dodge the fronts north and south heading their way

You can shoot the messenger or take 3 minutes to listen to what she has to say.
In a language that is not her mother tongue, I might add.

Listening to the leader and ex leader of the Nat's on radio yesterday, i was left shaking my head at their lack of leadership and maturity.
I later sat down and wrote my right of reply:

Bush fires, drought, floods are not a new phenomenon in Aust.and these are not the most devestating.. It is a
disgrace for the greens to blame the current gov't for political point scoring. The Nats could have phrased their response better but I agree with their sentiments.
BTW have you read this poem in full .Written a long long time ago
Extract.
"I love a sunburnt country,
A land of sweeping plains
Of ragged mountain ranges
Of droughts and flooding rains.
I love her far horizons
I love her jewel-sea,
Her beauty and her terror -"
extract
"Core of my heart, my country!
Land of the rainbow gold,
For flood and fire and famine
She pays us back threefold.
Over the thirsty paddocks,
Watch, after many days,
The filmy veil of greenness
That thickens as we gaze ..."

I find it dreadful that when folk point out the obvious previous aforementioned natural events that have happened constantly through the years other folk call them nasty names ...like climate change deniers

How Dare They!!

LOL

And Greta...shouldn't she be getting to this conference on a log she found in the forest and then wore the clothes she made herself from the forest lichens and such?

And NOT on a factory built boat with all these modern doodads etc etc blah blah etc etc blah blah

Politics is the contest of ideas. I have not and will continue to strive not to "call any one here nasty names". My poem is directed towards leadership. Look at this thread and it is obvious where the negative statements began. That's ok in a free world but its also a given for each of us to take personal responsibility for our own actions and statements. I will not look down on others who hold a different position to me but will communicate and answer questions and queries\ etc. Often between different opinions there is common ground somewhere within the extreme positions of the subject.
On the subject of political point scoring i'm not batting for the greens of any other party but my original intention with this thread was my interest in the La Vagabond phenomenon as it pertains to sailing and I see their journey and video fundraising effort as the contemporary example of what Alby Mangles did in the 70's, Eric and Susan Hiscock did before right back to Slocum and Voss. Slocum was responding to challenging times in his day with the advent of steam powered vessels and found a way to continue his lifestyle on the ocean.
I love the idealism of youth and their desire for a better life.............they may not have it all together, who has?

Well they say silence is consent so count me in with those who think Greta is an outstanding person and doing an amazing job of stating what should be the bleeding obvious to the rest of us and to our so called 'political leaders'.

For many, the Thunberg thing is not about climate change, believe in it or not. It's whether you think what the girl said is rediculass and is trying to prey on people's empathy, make them feel bad, guilty etc very much how a psychopath gets their victims. I believe she is being used and its that pathetic and so wrong that she needs to be mocked.

When i first saw Alby's adventures i wanted to go straight out and get a boat but my collection of guitars and everything they represent kept me closer to home. So now is the time for me to do my version of the Alby mangles adventure. Not sure if i will attempt the financing aspect though.

Alby had a story to belong to. Women I'm pretty sure love that. Men that have no fear to tread.

Personally I think Greta is right. It might be clear skies here however just check this

Pretty sure that is climate change. Probably used to be forest at one time with clean air.

Good on La Vagabond for helping out. At least they have the good old Aussie trait of helping someone in need out.

I only hope Greta is not permanently damage from this manipulating
if below is correct.
From that other site.
"
Greta's backers hide behind a chain of charitable trusts and pious slogans but with a little digging you can find and out a few of them. The main mover and shaker behind Greta was initially a Swedish guy named Ingmar Rentzhog who hides behind the name " We Don't Have Time ".www.thelocal.se/20190209/start-up-used-child-climate-activist-to-raise-millionsThat outfit has raised millions both in donations and via a share float. Yes, they went public. Talk about bilking the gullible. Greed is good but green is better.www.fundedbyme.com/en/campaign/8227/we-dont-have-time/In order to preserve her image of purity Greta appears to have recently split from these people. While working for We Don't Have Time Greta made continuing contacts with its board members and wealthy environmentally conscious Swedes Kristina Persson and Katharina Ringborg. Both of them are also on the board of a green outfit called Global Utmaning. Ringborg is a venture capitalist who trades with a syndicate of her buddies under the name " Sustainable Energy Angels " Awwwww, aint that cute ?en.globalutmaning.se/about/the-story-behind-global-challenge/http://seangels.se/en/partners-en/catharina-ringborg/British journalist Dominic Green investigated Thunberg's backers and summed up the situation this way" Whatever Greta or her parents know or think, her eco-mob increases the likelihood of legislation and investment that will make colossal profits for people like Global Challenge, We Don't Have Time and Sustainable Energy Angels. For Sweden's energy titans, saving the planet means government contracts to print the green stuff. Green energy lobbyists use populist scare tactics and a children's crusade to bypass elected representatives, but their goal is technocracy not democracy, profit not redistribution. Greta, a child of woke capitalism, is being used to ease the transition to green corporatism. "Closer to Greta lurks a German named Luisa Neubauer who shadows Greta everywhere telling her what to say and what to think. Watch any clip of Greta talking when Neubauer is not around to do the thinking and notice her stumble and bumble through a line of monosyllabic nothingness. The difference is remarkable.forums.sailinganarchy.com/uploads/monthly_2019_11/1614311617_images(1).jpg.8b6deb9e6ae485b22d06e269e53ac90d.jpgWho paid Neubauer ?Who paid for Greta's father to visit the US ?Who paid for the VO 60 to make a round trip across the Atlantic ?It sure wasn't Greta. I can't find mine either saintpeter - I guess my comments about climate change deniers were too much for some.
Given the usual profile of most deniers, I guess it's not surprising.
I'd join you in the naughty corner if I thought I deserved to....

What's the better alternative? Keep living in cities with cars emissions. I hate waiting at intersections on my bicycle or walking. Please for those who live 24/7 in a car, get out and smell it.
I can't wait for electric vehicles with no immediate pollution. I am invested in a lot of green companies. I feel better doing that then investing in oil.
There will be pollution however if solar and wind can reduce that as well as the efficiency of power stations opposed to individual oil burning cars then I'm all for business making money.
Talking about that young girl being a pawn is no different to multitudes of other companies using politicians as their spokesman. They are all just as dirty.
What the difference could be however is a cleaner world to live in, also for generations that follow.
As sailors we should be proud that people are harnessing what the world provides for free. It's what separates us from power boats.
I still drive a car but am increasingly feeling guilty, I have invested in solar, just purchased a biodigester for cooking and planning on a bunch of other ideas to cut down air-conditioning use in our house. Every bit helps.

26 knots, and sailing at 6.9 knots. Taking a steady sensible pace. I thought Riley used to push that cat a bit hard at times.

At 7 knots...it will take 450 hrs or 19 days if they dont have to tack again. Assuming its about 3000nm

I think the COP25 starts on Dec 2.

So they will need to speed up.
