Surprised not to find much when searching on this topic.. I am thinking about kiting at Rye back beach, now that I'm getting better at kiting in waves. Just surprised that when I've been down there before I've never really seen anyone out.
Anyone have any tips or things I should know about the conditions there? Are there particularly gnarly rips to watch out for?
Wind wize, I'm guess most kinds of southerly or westerlies should be ok..
There are people that kite there though it can be pretty sketchy unless the surf is small.
Westerport can be a smaller option for starting out in the surf.
I have kited (once) at Rye and thought it was good. Its an intermediate to advance spot.
There are some nasty rocks that can be hard to spot, and there are strong rips like most surf beaches on the Peninsula. Its best to have a bit of extra power up your sleeve when you need it (i.e. good wind).
Rye is really good. I ride there heaps but rarely see anyone else. Keep clear of the local surfers especially if you are learning. They paddle in all kinds of ****. Give 'em a wave and ignore the stink eye. As a local I show respect and encourage visitors to do the same. A good idea is to go for a walk along the beach at low tide and suss out where there is sand and where the rocks start. If there are swimmers near the car park stay well clear.
Best when Swellnet reporting 2-3' or 3-4' and south channel showing over 18k SE or WNW (west is offshore and sketchy). In the early season (now) it's actually windier down there than Brighton but as the ocean warms the seabreeze becomes a little too gutless.
The rip is your friend. This is where you should enter as it is what forms the channels and therefore the banks. Western Port trends to be gusty with gutless wall-less waves.

West is not offshore at Rye !
One of the last places id be trying to begin to surf kite. Lots of water movement and rocks\
W is still cross on
Why not just around the corner at Point Nepean? Flat water, waves and the safety of the bay if need be! Portsea, Rye, Gunna... man those places on any day is wild, rocks everywhere, sharks crusing back and forth. My favourite was Cosey Corner in Torquay. Waves, flat and very safe.

Corsair is what I was referring to, which works best on a S-SE or possibly a SW wind. If it's Northerly then forget it. Go to Rosebud
