Hello! I'm new in gold coast, I've heard of the KFC spot, just a couple of questions. which wind is right for sailing there? south? North?, another question, is there any risk of sharks, currents, rocks or anything I should know about the safety of the spot?
thanks and good wind!

Hi juanjo,

Welcome to the Gold Coast and our wonderful Kiteboarding playground.

The Kfc's Kiting Spot at Len Fox Park/Loders Creek is a great spot for flatwater Kiting in the Gold Coast Broadwater. With generally nice clear water and sand/seagrass bottom. There are good sandbars across from the location that offer good kiting over as the tide is high and when the tide is lower it is good to trim along the edges of the sand bars and get some nice very smooth water kiting action in. These sand bars and shallow draft of the channel in front generally creates for less current flow so it is a good place to kite on most tides. The only thing is when the tide is high it is a bit restrictive around the Launch/Land Area on the little beach on the Northern Peninsula of Loders Creek, where you may require an assisted launch with your kite held in the water line, otherwise your kite could easily end up in the trees nearby like many have done in the past.

There are some rocks and stormwater outlet pipes along the shoreline to the North, so it is best to not kite in to close to the shoreline there or walk your kite to close to the shoreline as you might find you could cut your feet on oysters attached to the rocks or pipes. There is a Caravan/Holiday Park to the South and its best to avoid kiting to close to it as well otherwise you could find your kite being blown into cabins or trees or onto fences at the Holiday Park. Out in front of the Creek Mouth there are two high marine Markers on poles, be careful not to get your kite caught up on those either. As for sharks, there can be sharks anywhere in Australia where waters are exposed to the Ocean. They are not a very common sight in the Broadwater or around at the Kfc's Kiting Spot but that is not to say there may be not any there. As Kiters and the Windsurfers out there, non have ever been attacked by them so far. This is where the old rule would apply as it is well known that in general sharks come on the chew from dusk through to dawn so it would make practical sense not to kite during those times.

With rains at the moment the water would be turbid and you may have to be observant of debris washing down from the creeks that you do not get caught up on. There are a group of Yachts and boats moored to the North of the Kfc's spot so best to avoid that area that you do not get hooked up on anything and of cause be observant for any boats or other water craft traversing through the area and keep your distance from our Wind Surfing Brothers out there as a show of respect for them and their safety/enjoyment.

The winds best suited for Kfc's are anything from North to North East, North East to East, East to South East and South East to South, South East. Please note that if the winds are from the South they are no good at this spot as those winds are wind shadowed from Building at Southport and trees in Holiday Park. If winds are from the South then generally everyone heads to Shearwater Esplanade at Runaway Bay.

Of cause it is always best to do a Hazard Evaluation when you arrive at the spot to go Kiting as well as talk to any Local Kiters that may be present to ask their opinion on conditions or any Hazards there, they may consider. So I hope this is of some assistance to you and we look forward to seeing you enjoying yourself at the spot along with everyone else there

I always write up a S.W.M.S (safe work method statement form every time I kite!

every spot on the broadwater is gusty ****, full of wankers on jet skis and boats speeding through the channel, because after all, this is the "gold coast" i.e wanker central. the launching areas at all of these spots are limited, and full of beginners making mistakes. avoid at all costs. try the beaches, main beach, narrowneck. the only wind worth riding is a SE'ly 20-25kts, which is seldom, the rest is too stormy or not enough. I lived and kited on the GC for 3 years and ill never go back unless its a pumping SE, they were good fun but RARE. good luck.

Geez mate, GC obviously left a bad taste in your mouth. Id have to agree with you on finding broadwater a bit offputting but the Goldie has heaps to offer, and we get these things called Northerlies in the Summer. Winter brings great SEers. It may not be the best place in the world but it aint too bad

Works in anything from SE - NNE
Low tide is less choppy.
You can head out to the sand bars in the middle which is also a great session.
