Hey all, went down to thornside today to check out the kiting area but didn't find any kites up.
There was a stretch of beach just south of Beth Boyd park. Is this the area?
I live at manly and would like to start kiting off the manly harbour yacht wall but I'm still quite new and would prefer more space to make my mistakes.
Do people just self launch and land at thornside because it is so quite?
Cheers.
Sorry, don't even know that area....
My advice, FWIW....
Go where the crowds are while ur learning, gather tips and info off others....
most kiters are more than helpful to others....
If you haven't been taught properly to self launch and land, don't even bother until u get proper instruction...
Have u been taught to self rescue?
Hi Scotty - I would repeat what Gilly said..
The site guide gives you locations near you - the closest would appear to be Wellington Point.
The location you chose does appear to have a fairly rocky shore line - there is a reason you do not see others kiting there.
If you are at the novice / begginer level - definitely safety when giving it a crack ...
The wind Friday / Saturday was a Northerly - so you need to allow for the likelihood you will go downwind either controlled or uncontrolled..
If you would not launch where you are going to end up and do not have help then err on the side of caution.
Where did you start / learn?
The real convenient launch / ride sites normally come with experience..
Be wary of shells and other sharp bits around rocks..
Ask away someone should be able to fill you in..
Cheers

I wouldn't be going anywhere near an area like that when you dont know whats under the water.
Wello point is packed, has a tiny tiny space for launch, and you can get fined by the council for inflating on the grass area apparently. Thats why I chose northside for kiting, as Sandgate reigns supreme for the bayside area-a couple of k's of uninterrupted, launchable beach and fat, consistent seabreezes.
Manly is too congested, Wynnum is out, and anything further south just doesnt work wind wise.
It's good to see you are looking for places that are safe to make mistakes- if everyone who was at your stage thought like this it would be fantastic, people do kite at thornside but are experienced and the conditions are fickle and not a good spot to be in trouble, Manly where u see kiters is even worse with absolutely no room for errors, there has been a couple of ambulance rides home from there lately and so many near misses: eg - last weekend a guy dragged into the fence and his kite into the boat yard -which the owners of expensive boats love!!! Definitely Sandgate & Brighton till you are completely confident and self sufficient- otherwise try some sandy open beaches at goldy or sunny coast, good luck and good on ya for having some brains??

Sandgate would have to be one of the worst kiting spots in Australia imho..
Jellies everywhere..
S/E winds = huge wind shadow
Short tacking newbies everywhere with no idea...
High tide = a whirl pool with waves smashing off the wall and back too the lumpy bay chop = terrible water conditions..
Kiters that will take you out when you have right of way as hitting the beach and dry land isn't an option = Sandgate crew.. All learners with out proper education as to safety of other kiters.
Want to learn how to hot launch and where to buy the most unusable kite kit for yourself = Sandgate.
True facts.. Should have some stuff up on YouTube regarding all this just to put some people's facts to light..
Avoid the place unless you are a glass half full person that has there blinkers on all the time..
Weirdest spot and crew in S/E Qld I found on my travels..

Thornside is great to kitesurf. 200 + meters wide opening and the tide goes out 300+ meters to the ocean. huge area to launch and land. just cant land on beach on full tide. Not for the inexperienced. No worse than Lota. No rockwalls going into water. Just always be safe and you will be fine. If you dont know how to dosomething, dont do it. always ask for help.
