Winters frosty tentacles have well and truly wrapped themselves around Adelaide, but it's not all bad news as winter brings strong frontal winds and big swell for those who want to brave the stormy conditions. So with strong winds and big swell it can only mean one thing- its time once again for the South Australian Kite Surfing Associations State Wave Titles.

This is aimed at being a fun event for every level of rider (beginners to the more advanced). Getting in and having a go is what SAKSA encourages - don't be a spectator, sign up and compete. Beach marshalls will be there to look after you and the more experienced crew are always happy to share some pointers. For the newbies this is a great chance to have a go at some decent waves then kick back and watch some of the fancy footwork of those who have been doing it for years.

To ensure good conditions the event is staggered over 4 weekends in June and July (25th and 26th June, 2nd and 3rd, 9th and 10th and 16th and 17th of July) – the first weekend with a good forecast and it's on !

The Event will be held on the Mid Coast with the exact location being chosen 2 days prior to the event, based on wind direction and swell. So if you're intending to compete make sure you keep a close eye on the SAKSA forum for further details.

The competition will be judged based on the PKRA style of judging and will consist of Open Mens and Womens, Masters, Amateur and Junior divisions.

The Mid Coast gives a number of great vantage point for spectators, so bring down your family and friends for whats sure to be a fun day with some great riding to be had.

So whether you're strapped or unstrapped, hook in or unhooked, throwing aerials or simply out there riding the wave and having fun, make sure u get along and compete to try and snag one of those coveted SAKSA trophies on offer- not to mention you will go in the running for some lucky draw prizes, there's something for everyone.

See you all there

Hey guys and girls,

Well its nearly hear…. This weekend is the first weekend of the comp, but early indications are that the weather is going to be calm and sunny, so it looks like it won't be on. The final decision will be made 2 days out from the weekend, so keep a eye on the forecast, Facebook and Seabreeze for up to date information.

I hope you all got out this weekend to get some last minute practice in. It was great to see a lot of new faces kiting at Seaford on Sunday and I heard there were kiters riding waves all along the coast! If your lucky enough to have Tuesday off, there will be waves all along the coast again, with Seacliff probably being the pick of the bunch. So have fun and rip it up.

More comp details will be posted in the next few days so stay tuned.

Cheers :-D

Ok so here are a few more details leading up to the event.

Cost: The event will cost $40 which includes entry, a BBQ lunch for competitors and a SAKSA 2011 State Wave Titles Cap.

Presentation: A presentation/movie night will be held after the last weekend of the event. At this stage we are looking at the 20th of July with the venue to be advised, so please keep this date free.

Other than that we just need to wait now until the Wind and Waves align over one of the next 4 weekends. So get out there and get practising as it would be great to see as many competitors down for the event as possible, no matter what your level of riding.

Ok guys and girls given it's only 2 days away from the first scheduled weekend of the 2011 State Wave Titles we have been reviewing all the wind and swell charts to make a call on weather the event will be run this weekend. While the wind strength and direction is look epic for the mid the swell isn't looking like it wants to play. At the moment it looks like its almost going to be a dodge tide on Saturday with small sets in the morning dying out throughout the day. Given the wind is looking so good we are holding off on making the decision until tomorrow when a definite Yes or No decision will be made once we have had a look at the updated forecast for Saturday. So keep your ears to the ground and check back here and on the SAKSA Facebook page for further updates tomorrow and lets all hope the swell comes to the party so we can all get out and have a crack at the waves this weekend.

Cheers

Hey everyone just a quick update to let you know we have decided to call the event off this weekend. While the wind is looking perfect after consulting some of the local wind and wave gurus it has been decided to hold out for bigger swell. While the swell looks to be small and fun it was decided that its probably not going to be enough to hold a decent wave event.

Hope this doesnt inconvenience anyone and we apologise if it does. Keep an eye out for more details next week.

Hey guys and girls this is your "amber light", advanced heads up that Sunday is looking the goods for running the comp. If you're coming from afar or just gotta get things sorted, start making arrangements now.

We'll endeavor to make the final call tomorrow for a Sunday comp. That gives you 3-4 days to get down here.

STATE WAVE TITLES...It's ON!!
Righto folks,

Sunday 3rd July is the day. SAKSA State Wave Titles are on. We're expecting a stinking nor-wester with low tide at 11am and building swell after that.

Here's the details... Don't be late!

Where: meeting at Seaford carpark (Cnr Aldam Rd and Esplanade, Seaford)
When: 8am, 3rd July
Briefing: 8:15am sharp!

Note: the comp may be moved on the day to any number of breaks along the mid coast, depending on the actual conditions of the day. Be organized, be there at 8am and don't miss the briefing. Its your responsibility to know where we'll be after that. The briefing is your ticket to being informed and contains important running and safety information that you NEED to be aware of.

Anyway, enough of the formalities, get on down, it's not looking at this stage like being wet, have a go, have a damn good time and cheer on your fellow kite crew!

Please stay in tune with seabreeze and facebook for any updates.

See you all there!!

Its on like Donkey Kong!

Its shaping up to be a cracker day on the water this Sunday by the looks of things. Here are a few more details/reminders prior to the event:

Entry Cost: $40 which includes entry, a BBQ lunch for competitors and a SAKSA 2011 State Wave Titles Cap (we must apologies that caps wont be available on the day but will distribute them at the presentation night to all competitors).

Volunteers on the day would be greatly appreciated as many hands make like work. If we all pitch in and help out im sure we can make this an awesome event. If your competing and can help out between heats or even if your not competeing and can spare some time on the day the SAKSA committee would appreciate any assistance they can get.

Note: For insurance purposes if your looking to compete please make sure you are currently a financial AKSA member (or equivilent). While we would love to say its open to everyone from a liability point of view no insurance = no entry!

We have arranged to have a photographer come down and take some pics throughout the day and have a budding young filmaker keen to film the event and put together a little video. So if your looking to feed your ego with some nice self portraits get along and get on the water.

Other than that guys lets hope it turns on like its supposed too and its a cracker event. If your humming and harring come down have a look and we would love to have as many of you on the water competeing as possible. Bring the family and friends too as Seaford gives a great platform up on the cliffs to watch all the action on the water.

Cheers

SAKSA State Wave Titles - Briefing Document

Rules, Judging Criteria and Safety Information.

Welcome to the 2011 SAKSA State Wave Titles. This competition is expressly a wave-riding competition, thus derives much of it's rules, etiquette and judging criteria from surf competitions.

This year, as was done for the 2010 SAKSA Freestyle Championships, we have adopted a PKRA criteria for judges. This allows us to use an internationally recognised judging format that prepares competitors for international standard riding and judging, should they progress to that level. But in doing so, it caters for all rider levels and styles in a fair and unbiased manner.

CATEGORIES

Juniors: Under 18 years at 1st January 2011.
Amateurs: Non-industry competitors. No shop riders, no instructors. For riders with limited wave-riding experience. Competitors deemed by the judges to be “over-qualified” for Amateurs, may be bumped up to a higher grade after the first round has been run. The spirit of the Amateur division is to give riders without much experience in competition and wave-riding a chance to try their hand at the competition.
Open Women: This is an open category and eliminates competitors from other categories.
Open Men: This is an open category and eliminates competitors from other categories.
Masters: Over 35 years only. Competitors can enter Amateurs as well.

Competitors can choose a maximum of 2 categories to compete in, excluding Open Men or Women. Competitors choosing to enter Open categories are limited to that category only and may not enter Juniors, Amateurs or Masters categories as well. This is to ensure fair competition.

JUDGING

1 The judging panel shall consist of 3 judges with a background in kite
wave-riding or surfing.

2 The point scoring system, on the basis of 1 - 10

3 If a judge misses a wave, or part of a wave, he will put an M in the square of the manual sheet, and that score will be tabulated at the end of the heat by the Head judge and will be the average of the other two judges scores.

4 The contest director will determine the number of waves to be scored on each heat at the beginning of the competition, taking into consideration the wave conditions for the day. This could be modified at the beginning of each round if conditions change drastically during the day. As a starting point, the number of waves is set at 2.

5 The scoring sheets will be shown upon request to a competitor, as long as that competitor competed on that heat.

6 The judge's decision cannot be appealed.

7 The head judge has the power to re-run a heat, only when they were able to watch the
entire heat and they firmly believe there is a big discrepancy in the judging scores. This may also be based on conditions.

JUDGING CRITERIA

1 The judging criteria will be based in the following:

The rider must perform radical maneuvers in the critical section of a wave with Speed, Power and Flow to maximize scoring potential. Progressive wave ridding as well as Variety of Repertoire, will be taken into consideration when rewarding points for waves ridden. The rider who executes this criteria with the maximum degree of difficulty and commitment on the waves shall be rewarded with the higher scores.

2 The criteria shall be broken into 3 main sections for evaluation.

A) Radical Controlled Maneuvers

This is by far the most important part of the criteria. Modern day maneuvers basically constitute change of direction of the board on the wave (not the surfer on the board). Such maneuvers would include re-entries, cutbacks, floaters, aerials, tube rides etc. How radical they are, followed by the amount of control and commitment put into each of them, will determine how high they will score.
POWER COMMITMENT CONTROL
IT IS IMPORTANT TO NOTE, EVEN IF A SURFER HAS COMPLETED 90% OF A MANEUVER, IT WILL NOT SCORE IF HE LOSES CONTROL AND FALLS OFF.

B) Most Critical Section

This part of the criteria describes the positions on the wave maneuvers should be performed to score the maximum points. THE CRITICAL SECTION OF THE WAVE IS THE "POCKET ", CLOSEST TO THE CURL. The degree of commitment and the risk involved in performing close to the curl is the reason that it scores higher. The most important critical section of the wave is the first section " OUT THE BACK". Degree of difficulty and risk taken = reward.

C) Best Waves

WAVE SELECTION IS THE SINGLE MOST IMPORTANT FACTOR FOR A SURFER IN HIS HEAT. The wave that he selects will dictate the maneuvers he is able to perform. Today there is less emphasis put on wave size in small to medium conditions due to the fact that the best waves may not necessarily be the biggest.
However in a contest with big wave conditions, the most important part of the Criteria would be the size. The surfer who is prepared to catch the biggest waves and do the maneuvers shows the greatest commitment.
A surfer does not automatically score high because of wave size or quality. The surfer must comply with the first section of the Criteria and wave selection to capitalize on full scoring potential.

3 When a rider is going out to see and he makes a transition maneuver to change direction and catch the wave, such action wont count in the wave riding score and the judges will only start judging the wave once he riders starts riding it.

4 When a riders wipes out on the wave his score will be counted until the point at
which he wiped out.

5 If a rider is already riding a wave when the heat ends this wave will count on its entirety and the judges will score it.

6 Using the energy generated from the kite to surf the wave wont penalize the rider, however a rider that uses exclusively the energy generated by the wave to surf the wave will score higher than a rider that uses the energy of the kite during his wave riding.

7 The use of foot-straps wont penalize the rider that uses them over one that doesn't. However it will be taken in to consideration when doing maneuvers like aerials, floaters, 360, etc.... due to the higher difficulty of performing such maneuvers without foot-straps.

PENALTIES

1 A competitor could be disqualified by the judges for making a fault against another
competitor.

2 A competitor could be disqualified from a heat or the event for violating the PKRA Wave Riding Rules.

RIGHT OF WAY RULES

1 Opposite Tack

a) When two competitors cross each other while one of them is surfing, the one surfing the wave has right of way. The competitor going out should stay clear of competitors surfing the wave.

b) When two competitors in opposite tacks cross each other when not surfing a wave, then the windward rider should keep his kite high to avoid a tangle with the leeward rider.

c) When two competitors in opposite tacks and equally upwind, the Starboard Rider has right of way over the port rider. Starboard Rider should cross-upwind keeping the kite high while the port rider should cross downwind keeping the kite low.

2 Riders in the same wave.

a) The competitor that catches the wave the earliest will have right of way over the other riders, and the other riders should get off the wave to avoid obstructing the rider who has preference.

b) When two or more riders catch the wave at the same time, the one farthest upwind shall have right of way.

3 Transitions.

a) A competitor changing tacks should keep clear of other competitors on a tack.

b) When two competitors are changing tacks at the same time, then the competitor
to windward should stay clear of the competitor to leeward.

4 Right of way doesn't exonerate a competitor who abuses the right of way, and deliberately makes contact with the competitor who is blocking his way. Safe kiting rules apply here.

5 When a competitor drops his kite and is swimming in the water, the other competitors shall avoid riding or jumping across his lines, whenever it is physically possible.

6 As a general rule, competitors should give themselves room and keep each other sufficiently separate to not get on each other way.

7 Any competitor not following the above rules could be penalized or disqualified from his heat.

8 When a tangle occurs the rider at fault will be disqualified from his heat, and the affected rider will either, advance to the next heat in case the heat had only two competitors, or his heat will be reran in case the heat involved a third competitor.

Hi guys!

Just want to say a massive thanks to everyone who helped make today's comp a total success!

We couldn't have done it without the help of the following great people... Firstly Danny James for being head judge ALL DAY. Robin Higham for his awesome BBQ skills (again!). Doolz, Craig and Rhys Gardner for judging throughout the day. Troy for being your usual super organized, helpful as all hell self!

Big thanks to Jac and Easto for driving 8 hours for the comp and all the local crew who got down and competed. Thanks also to the mates and partners who came down to support the event, you guys can't be forgotten.

Thanks heaps! Myself and SAKSA are stoked with the turnout and the great helpful crew we get to deal with in these situations. You're all a great lot to work with!

Cheers,

what a great briefing document guys, really like the section on respecting others. im an avid kiteboarder and surfer and watched some of the "comp" today and to my amazment and total disbelief, i watched saksa competition entrants run through a surfing competition heat that was going on. the relationships between kite boarders and surfers is already starined enough and no matter who was there first, where was the respect of other users in the water today?

well done guys

Hi Glen ... if you are an avid kiteboarder you should of been out there yourself supporting your local crew , maybe then you would of realised that sometimes we ended up down wind and in the zone of the surfers but we certainly did'nt hang around long enough to piss them off deliberately. The surfers may of been there first but i myself did'nt cop one bit of abuse from them today it was just unfortunate that the comps fell on the same time , spot and day.We didn't winge about the sailboarders in our comp zone.
We had officials on the beach all day keeping and eye on things and if the surf comp organisers weren't happy they should of come up and said something.
Thumbs up to the surfers that were out there today giving it a good crack...

Maybe next year you will compete and show us all how to stay upwind and rip !!!

Well done SAKSA for your voluntary efforts ! See you next year Glen.

Hey guys!

Great comp! I'm always really proud of the SAKSA group and their efforts. Its always a fun atmosphere, but the judging is also taken seriously which is great, and respectful to those riders training and putting in their best!

Glen,
Once we all realised we were going into the surfer area the comp was shifted North to attempt to stay out of the zone to share the waves in the area. We were all watching the surfers too and enjoying their comp.
Also please understand there were some juniors and amateurs our there in our comp who have not been riding waves for a long time (including myself). Most of us (like myself) if we noticed we were near to the surfers, got out of the water onto the beach and walked up - intentionally trying to keep out of the surfer zone because we did not want to interfere. Thanks for your comments Glen, we were trying to give the surfers space - as I said, we did move the comp further North later in the morning.
It was great to see surfers, windsurfers and kiters all out there enjoying the day yesterday!

Hi,

If you were there yesterday you would of seen the SAKSA crew walk down and speak to the organisers of the surf comp. You would of then heard what was organised with the surf crew.

1) SAKSA has council permission to hold the event at Seaford. The surf comp did not.

2) ALL competeters were asked to keep clear if possible of the Surf event. ( this was first done at the breefing and again through out the day)

3) I was judging all day and 99% of riders bailed out before they got anywhere near the surf comp. There were a few who went through the surf comp zone, NO one got in anybody's way.

I understand your concern.

The kids I spoke to who were in the Surf comp where stoked to see such good riding. A few even asked how they get into Kites.

I personally answered the question " How do we get in to this sport" at least 10 times.

As far as I'm concerned due dillagence was applied to ALL who were in attendance at the Comp.

SAKSA should not be held responsible for a few stray competitors that were told a number of times to keep clear.

Not sure what else we could of done.

Cheers
