I've been kiting for 6 years so not exactly a newbie anymore but I've nowhere near the talents of some other kiters and I just had to share the stoke somewhere.
I've been wanting to try a double backroll since last season. Today I finally got the nerve up. First attempt I changed my mind maybe 10 times as I approached the kicker whether to go or not, wish I'd committed earlier, spin spin almost landed it. Now I had an idea how hard I needed to spin to make it around twice. Second attempt went perfectly great height perfect angle smoothest landing ever. So then I was frothing. By the third attempt I figured I'm pretty good at this, went into it completely unprepared got too much height half looped the kite and crashed landed hard on my back. Just thought I'd share it here because everytime I try something new I get that newbie kiter stoke again.
Nice work Joe
I also feel I'm not as accomplished as my years flying a kite should dictate however a few seasons back I took on the challenge of trying one new trick every session and working on the tricks I hadn't mastered yet. I'm a master at crashing but my riding has progressed more in 2 seasons than it did in 6 years before that.
Keep up the stoke
What are these seasons you folk talk of ?
Last time i was in WA a local said its cold winters day today. At that point I thought wow WA. Has winter spring autumn and summer too. But yr post gives rise to the possibilty that yr only season could be winter. You poor bastards!
Fu kyeah
Just landed a triple backroll.
Went for a double, got too much height, had to throw in an extra rotation.
Frothin'
Took up foiling at age 64. Super technical but rewarding. After 6 months I see improvements every session.
After 6 years on lithiums, switched to Ozone Enduro V2 14m. First session this week.
Not as much grunt as the Lithium, softer feel. But the down wind and drift characteristics are a step up.
The Lithium was always developing power and needed to sit deep in the window - the Enduro further forward and great power/de-power range. More of a "with the kite" than "against the kite" feel. Allows you to be a bit more independent of the kite's power, but it is immediately there when you need it.
Can't wait to see what it is like for a directional in some small surf. Expect the down wind heel/toe turns on the directional will be easier.
Changing kit/style of kite makes it seem new again and lots of possibilities to improve. Pumped with the switch.

On what setting?
The old double back roll. Haven't tried it for years. Okay Phsycojoe I accept the challenge. I will see if I can still do it this weekend.
I guess when it comes to learning new tricks it is not being scared to crash. Well I should be alright then, that's what I do best.
Well, a week or so ago I had an epic day. In the morning I when a punched some go to hospital if you run short gaps on the mountain bike, Which was epic as Fark!.
Then I went down the coast for a wave session to find double head and nobody there. So I had double head slabs to myself for the whole session. I counted 17 slabs in the hour I was kiting. It was a glorious session indeed made more glorious by the fact that I had the epic mountain bike session in the morning.
Good times.
This is the actual jump in question
A photo from another day of the same location.
Remember my first double back roll... Complete accident, thought I was going to stack it brutally -- twice
Went for a single, got lofted by a gust and spun right around, then as I came down spun again... Then landed it and ride off like I meant to do it :D "OMG I'm ok OMG I'm ok... Huh."
The old Speed3 21 was great for multiple rotations...
