An 8 and 11 will do, but the 11 will not get much use.

Or 7,9,11

Or 6,8,10

If I had only 1 kite it would be a 9.

Assuming you know what you are doing or are getting some lessons.

Used kites are cheap, just get the same size you used in lessons.

Dont overthink it, I have 5,7,8,9,11,15 and it was far easier to choose a kite when it was just 8 and 11.

So maybe for your weight that would be 7 and 10, with a couple of boards you will be sorted.

Hi Danno,

if you are a complete beginner you want to be very careful when purchasing second hand kites without a very experienced kiter or instructor to inspect them. More than half my students who choose to ignore my advice end up with the wrong kites, kites that are simply too old or in too poor/unusable conditions and often with poor/dangerous safety systems.

Yes there are plenty of good bargains out there for second hand kites, but buying them without proper inspection of the kite/bar/lines/safety system is risky, especially if you are chasing very cheap kites.

As for the sizes, you don't need a quiver when learning as you mainly want to choose days when the wind is at least 18 knots and not much more than 25 knots: these are ideal learning conditions. That would correspond to roughly a 9m kite for you, 10m at the most.

Hi Danno,For reference, I kite-surfed all last season in Perth on a single kite and board. I was about 82kg and have a 10m Naish Park and 139x41 board. Out of all the times I went kiting, there was only one day when i was at the beach when the wind was really too strong to go out, and only one day when the wind dropped off and was too weak by the time I got there. (Driving to Safety Bay from the city)Sure I could have gone out more with an extra kite but I think I learned a lot by not having much choice of equipment.
Edit: Apart from lessons where I used a few different size kites and bigger boards -> get lessons.

So you recommend 6,7,8,9,10,11, or some combination there of.

Observation - kite size will be influenced by location. I would rarely ride a 10 in summer in Perth and I'm 87kg. I kite in the ocean on a SB and need a lot less power. I would usually ride 5-7m in our summer winds.

Other guys wanting to boost big on TT would ride 9-10m in same conditions, and like neutral, if they ride flat water, can hold down a lot more power.

So make make sure you choose something that suits YOUR spot, and not someone else's spot.

Hi Danno

Kite size doesn't paint the entire picture. Some kites are very powerful for their size whilst others can be less powerful. Some feel less powerful unless flown aggressively when they become powerful. Drop into our shop if you are in Perth and we can explain the differences between each kite model and brand and can show you what would be suitable from our second hand wall.

Yes, Kite size changes according to the location. You must select one according to that.
