I'll be in Wollongong next month and just wanted some advice about kite spots and any local tips eg where to avoid, best tides. I've worked out that kiters avoid the city beaches eg North Beach, and of course any flagged areas.
On my last trip to Wollongong (without kites) I had a chat to a friendly kiter at Bellambi Lagoon/East Corrimal who kindly pointed out the rock hazards - it seems like a good spot for NE/E afternoon sea breezes, and looks like it would work at most tides?
Looking at the maps Windang looks like it would work too - is there a particular area where kiters rig up there?
For flatwater, do people kite at Minnamurra or Shoalhaven? Or do you have to drive to Huskisson?
Also if a beginner friend wants to go out, where would you recommend? I was thinking Huskisson but maybe there is somewhere closer to Wollongong?
Advice appreciated.

Hi Relaunch, welcome to the forum.

The coastal spots north of Wollongong:

NE:

Peggy's (the beach south of Sandon point) - North end
Wonoona
East Corrimal (this is my favourite, good wind and waves for the surfboard)
Towradgi (just south of the point)

S:

Peggy's (the beach south of Sandon point) - South end
Towradgi (just north of the point)

Others:

I have heard that Shellharbour has some spots, and Windang island also has a following.

Seven mile beach (at beach road) can be good, and Jervis bay (moona moona creek) is great wind, but far away, choppy and no surf.

I've never heard of anyone kiting Minnamurra, but some guys find flatwater in Shoalhaven.

Lake Illawarra (Primbee) also has a following, but I myself don't enjoy the water quality, launch and wind quality.

Thanks Simon.
Looks like East Corrimal & Towradgi will be good options for me, but maybe the flatter water at Primbee might be better if my beginner friend wants to have a go.
Cheers Kim

The Primbee launch spot is very tight and not for beginners. Could work if you launch and then hand over somewhere sensible.

Is the tight launch spot at the north end of Purry Burry Ave to the east of the Spit? Or elsewhere?

That's the one, super sketch on a kite. I've looked further north near the yacht clubs, but have never seen anyone launching from around there.

Sorry but I need to put something up Relaunch as you have been misinformed about Primbee .We kite west of the setup area. North West to South West for beginners is dangerous, don't even try . South to SSW is quite friendly for beginners as long as the wind isn't nuking. N to NE is cross offshore so its gusty because it comes over the trees but it is knee deep for about 100m out but after that is open lake. Ive been kiting there since 2007 and ive seen quite a few unsafe things happen but that has mostly been through winter when westerlies are going from 15 to 50 knots.

Jervis bay would be a lot nicer and cleaner water though. Cheers

Fair call! Only times I've been to check out Primbee have been in Westerlies as the closest option. Thanks for the better info teabaggin!
