Hi all
I am happy with my 10sqm Ozone Catalyst V1 2018 kite in the 17-23 knts range but need something smaller for the stronger wind days. I was thinking about 7sqm. Any advice? And/or recommendations for good second hand models?
I am intermediate level, 77kg and have a Twintip Liquid Force DLX 134cm board.
Cheers!
Florian
I'd say a 2m difference between kites would probably see you using your smaller kite more often. So my opinion would be to go for an 8.
On your 134 twin tip, I would go 8m...there's a lot of 8 meter kites around, easier to find than 7m new or used.
Also depends on local winds, maybe ask any one at your local spot.
I'd suggest 8m too at your weight.
1. As you get better your 10m range will extend (comfortable to 25+ knots) and then the conditions you'll need for the 7m will become increasingly rare.
2. Closer sweet spot means less kite changes. Out on the 8m and it drops then you change your session to work on skills for a bit (riding blind etc) to see if it picks up again. If you are on a smaller kite and it drops then its change kite or change board only.
3. Softer landings from big jumps. Its only a metre difference but the landings just feel softer with that extra bit of canopy.
I think it depends where you live. If you're in Vic or WA you definitely want a 7 to keep you kiting in winter and the stronger days, but if you like being overpowered maybe an 8 will suffice.

I'd suggest that maybe a more sensible solution at present is to sit out the big days altogether if you aren't experienced. Strong wind days are when stuff goes wrong quickly and you don't want to be in a waiting room looking to get medical care at the moment.
wouldnt bother with a 7m unless your on a surfboard. 8m in wa free ride on a twin tip is fine
Even with the winter storms, i would be comming in anyways when you see a squall or try head out to sea and keep the kite low. you wont notice the meter difference in that scenario.
Thats a tiny wind range.
Get someone to look at your posture when you kite and learn to edge harder.
Then in light wind practice some finesse.
For sure get a smaller kite 7 or 8 and a bigger kite like 14 to 17 for the light days.
At 72kg with a 10m and two or three boards I enjoy kiting a little under 15knts to a little under 30knts.
It's a bit too much overlap between an 8 and a 10. If you are an intermediate kiter, you are better off getting the same brand and model (not necessarily the same year). So, it's a 7m Cat V1+. You may also consider a second (smaller) board for the heavy days.... for big air.
