Just want to get a few opinions.
About to order a new surfboard for waves/freestyle.
One of the local shapers has offered to do a combo surfboard and put the foil mount rails on the bottom also so it could double as a foil board. The shaper is more of a foil board shaper so probably not as concerned about bottom contours.
I'm trying to work out whether I should just get a surfboard for the purpose as i'm Not sure if having the mount on the bottom would affect performance. (My thoughts are yes)
When i'm ready to try foiling I'll just need to invest the extra for a separate board.
Surfboard with foil mounts are not really good at anything.
If the guy does a proper job reinforcing the board, you're looking at 500gr of added weight (at least) to your surfboard.
Foiling with a surfboard is not nice. Ok to get started but you'll soon figure out that the extra length is not ideal.
Thanks for that. I suspected so.
Admittedly the boards are probably more like a strapless directional but still not sure that the performance would be fantastic.
+1, The dream is a long way from reality, tried a few hybrid boards and tried making a few- get your dream surfboard and a dedicated foil board, the saving is not really worth it unless you're not particularly passionate about either discipline

+1 Two different boards Foil no rocker in tail area and surf board with rocker You will be compromising on both As above Also would be concerned that you have been given this choice from board maker You could have light weight Carbon Vac board which would cost a lot But still will not have appropriate rocker / shape etc for foil or surf
Bit like having a kiteboard to use as a surfboard ... just doesn't work unless you weigh 45kg or super fit paddler
Seems to me the foil board use as a kite surfboard is a gimmick to make you buy an overpriced foil board
Seen a kid locally on a small bit of plywood (presumably built by daddy) with foil works fine
What would you guys say about the Cabrinha X Breed? As a foil / surf board combo... Seems to get good reviews (but I know SFA about foiling, and sometimes 'good reviews' can be biased)

I guess the question is Have you seen good kite surfer on waves and ripping it up on combo board Or good kite foiler ripping it up on combo board For me nun I kite with
Most guys are on twinny's at my locals. Some older guys foil around but I've never paid any close attention to them TBH

I didn't rate that board as a straight surfboard, so as a foil conx I cannot imagine it would be an improvement
biased reviews, you're kidding right?

Agreed keep the boards separate small foil board and a surfboard
Thats the right choice. 2 separate boards is the go.
You can then have 2 dedicated set ups. one hybrib boards means your constantly changing set up. its a pain in the arse.
Plus you can go small with a dedicated foil board. Then leave it bolted to the foil..... no set up at the beach. Boom!
Thanks all, surfboard has been ordered.
Will worry about a foil board at later stage.
You've definitely done the right thing.
As someone who has a combo ( the NHP infinity foil), I can confirm at best it's a mediocre foil board and an ok light wind day board. It's a split board so it travels well when I used to go longer distances. As a surfboard it's got no volume and has a hard time in chip and gets over powered quick :)
The other problem is it's a pain to remove the foil in order to use the board. Having two separate boards is more convenient if the wind shifts and you want to ride something else
