I've got a massive urge to buy an Airush Section v3 at 95kg should I go for the 60 or the 54? I've come from windsurfing and the urge comes from a strong desire to carve strap to strap not necessarily ride waves. I understand the 54 is likely to be more fun when it's windy enough but am guessing the 60 would be a lot more sensible for the larger man. Any advice (except diet related) would be much appreciated.

My mate weighs 95kg and likes both the 54 and the 60. He prefers the 54 in strong winds.

I loved the 60 and hated the 54 in the few goes I had. I think the 54 has too straight an outline. The 60 has a nice curve to it.

The 60 is fun in flat water, but for me it really shined in stronger wind with waves and a small kite. Think longboarding with a kite. Lots of beautiful carving turns and trimming along on small waves.

I use the past tense because we've moved on to foils. The Sector 60s got sold. My mate still has his 54 but never uses it. I occasionally (rarely) get out on a surfboard of similar size to the 54.

It's important to point out that riding directionals is a skill. The vast majority of people have their weight too far back. They bog along with the nose flopping up and down and don't engage the rail to carve. You need to properly trim the board to get out of it and pressure the rail to carve through the turns.

I would think it is accurate to describe kiting a Sector 60 as the nearest thing you can get to windsurfing with a kite, but it's up to you to make it that way.

I was happiest with the front foot in the straps and the back foot free on the deck in front of the back straps. It was easy enough to pop a foot in the back strap to jump. I preferred a single back strap. Others use two back straps.

Get a foil. The sectors were fun and when introduced but these days are completely surpassed by foils for light wind, upwind, downwind and all round performance.

I can't thing of a single reason to ride one today. I can still feel my back leg burning.

Conversely, since trying a OR Duke (same type of thing to a sector but different manufacturer) I haven't been out on my foil since. Theres something different about blasting along bumping your way over the chop that I don't get from a foil. I'm not sure foiling is the one type fits all any more than strapless surf boards.

60 is the way to go for what you want, and the V3 is the sweet spot. But I'd grab a 54 too, and don't forget the V3 66.

I've owned from V3 to V6, love them. While foils have replaced most of my light wind stuff, they can't replace the 60, still have a V3 and still love it. As has been said they need good technique and some dedication to get the best out of them.

FYI - Don't try to carve off of the fins with a flat board like I did initially, at 95 kegs you will break fins.
