As foiling gains in popularity I can see a situation where the learning curve for getting into kitesurfing is going to be so high that the average Jill or joe is going to be so intimidated by the skills and cost required to be considered good at it or even get started that they just won't bother. If seasoned kiters with years of experience under their belt find it really challenging then what chance the lay person. Unless you grow up in a kiting family even young people won't take it up. Basically the sport will die, windsurfing style, as the old time afficionados age with it.
On another note why is mowing the lawn suddenly cool now just because it's 1m up in the air and you spent $2k to do it?

2K in 52 weeks = 38 bucks / week. It all depends on how much you use it.
And a foil should last longer than one year, so it doesn't look so expensive if you think this way.
You can still sell it 2 years latter for 1K, so not a bad deal.

I'm actually doing ok all things considered thanks. I had a bit of a run in with some driftwood while kitesurfing... my lower right leg got impaled from above the ankle through the leg to my inside upper calf. Three months later and I feel like I'm almost ready to get back on the water...

It has become a very interesting thread! I was not trying to say foiling isn't fun as I'm sure it is to those on the know, it just seems the challenge is so high to progress that if all the experienced kitesurfers end up doing it, then it might end up turning off Joe public from even starting the sport as it'll all just seem to intimidating to get started anywhere similar as these diehards who have been doing it years.

Have converted a few more surfers to kitesurfing this season, in a very short period, for under 1k investment
Mainstream gear is easy to use nowdays and cheapish 2nd hand
If you want to specialise you pay the $$
There are more foilers out there now, some may convert to kitefoiling with these bigger easy wings

In terms of people seeing foiling and wanting to take it up, you realise the general public can't tell the difference between a TT and a surfboard and a foil board, or even a sailboard for that matter? They don't see that foilers are up above the water. To them it's all parasailing or windsliding. They did it once at Koh Samui. That rudder thing underneath is for steering. Don't they all have one?
