Uninhabited Islands and Perfect Kiting Conditions

"The wind swung around to the perfect direction. The swell cleaned up as
the tide dropped. Nobody was out, because after all, the island was
uninhabited, and the guys had the most incredible session with just them
on the water."
Some of the most enjoyable kiting sessions come from the days you least expect; the team from Patagonia know this all too well after spending a few weeks on board the Cabrinha Quest in the Pacific, at a place they call ‘The Island of Everything’.

On board the Cabrinha Quest, there’s nothing much to do except kite, surf, fish, and explore the surrounding islands. Not a bad way to spend a couple of weeks, but what if the conditions don’t turn on?

No problem thought the small crew from Patagonia, Kohl Christensen, Hank Gaskell, Jason Slezak and Reo Stevens, as they packed the storage compartments to the brim with all the toys they could find. The plan was to make the most of what conditions were on offer in the Pacific during the ‘off season’, with big kites and hydrofoils forming the bulk of their equipment and some smaller gear tucked away down the bottom, just in case.

“It was probably the most beautiful place I’ve ever been to. I’ve never seen water that clear in my life. Because we set out to make the
most of what was there, we ended up scoring about a thousand percent more than any of us could have expected."

So when they arrived at a secluded right hander, of course with nobody out, the guys all pumped up and tried to make it work. The off direction, chopped up situation made it less than optimal for kiting, so they ditched the kites and went surfing instead. They waited around, surfed a bit, just biding their time before giving up, and when you watch the clip below, you’ll understand just how lucky they were that they did stick around!

That was just the beginning for the group however, as the Cabrinha Quest continues it’s journey around the world.

"We surfed amazing waves with uncrowded lineups. We got to kite dream setups that were things like you might sketch in your notebook when you were a kid in school. We fished, we dove and spearfished in some of the most fruitful waters that I had ever seen. And all along the way, had an outstanding adventure with a great group of people.”

Check out the great clip by Patagonia and Liquid Force below, where four kiters make the most of the conditions they have, and bide their time until the dream session comes along.
